Because I could not stop for Death
Oleh: Emily Dickinson
**BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH**
Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too, –
For His Civility.
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun.
Or rather – He passed Us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle.
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground.
Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity.

**Karena Aku Tak Sanggup Berhenti bagi Maut**
Karena aku tak sanggup berhenti bagi Maut –
Beliau menunggu untukku –
Kereta itu hanya memuat kami berdua –
Dan Keabadian.
Kami berangkat perlahan – Beliau tidak mempercepat
Aku sudah menghapus
Segala kerja dan hiburanku pula, –
Untuk sopan santunnya.
Kami lalu melewati Sekolah, di mana anak-anak bergulat
Saat istirahat – di dalam cincin –
Kami lalu melewati Ladang Berbutir –
Kami lalu melewati Matahari Terbenam.
Atau lebih tepatnya – Beliau melaluiku –
Embun menggigil dan dingin –
Hanya pakaian sutra tipis, gaunku –
Selendangku – hanya kain katun halus.
Kami berhenti di depan sebuah Rumah yang tampak
Sebuah tonjolan tanah –
Atapnya hampir tak terlihat –
Tahtanya – terdalam tanah.
Sejak itu – berabad-abad telah berlalu –
Namun rasanya lebih pendek dari Hari
Pertama kali aku menduga kepala-kepala kuda
Mengarah ke Keabadian.
